Dental unit water systems – achieving ‘best practice’

3 mins read Decontamination/HTM 01-05
Simon Davies considers the apparent omission within HTM 01-05 for water systems in dental practices to be validated annually and explores what action is needed

If you were to ask any dental professional what their top five job-focused priorities were, I’d hazard they would run pretty much in line with a number of the GDC’s nine principles, as laid out in Standards for the Dental Team.

Alongside the desire to put patients’ interests first and to work effectively with colleagues would, most likely, be a wish to achieve excellent infection control standards.

Offering guidance on what this may constitute is HTM 01-05: Decontamination in primary care dental practices (2013). Amongst the essential information contained within this memorandum are standards relating to hot and cold water systems and dental unit water lines with advice for dental team members on how to achieve ‘best practice’.
