The involvement of nurses in research has little mention within dentistry. Dental research trials tend to be undertaken in the hospital environment, as studies require time and resources that are sometimes not suited for general practice

My role as a research nurse within dentistry has evolved over several years. My current position was created as research in my work place grew to a level that necessitated a dedicated individual to coordinate the studies being carried out.

Prior to becoming involved with research, it is necessary to complete training in Good Clinical Practice (GCP). This provides guidelines on the ethical aspects of clinical research, and protecting human rights, and provides the techniques necessary to collect quality data. It outlines the standards that need to be met and the policies and procedures that should be followed to ensure that these standards are maintained.
