How do the fundamental standards and KLOEs relate to the role and activities of dental nurses? Dave Hancock investigates

Let's set the scene (although I'm aware this is by way of revision for most of you), the Care Quality Commission (CQC) makes sure ‘health and social care services provide people with safe, effective, compassionate, high-quality care and encourage[s] them to improve’. To achieve this, it publishes regulations for providers and managers of health and social care services. These regulations are enshrined in the Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2014 and some of them are deemed fundamental standards. So you don't have to remember each of the fundamental standards, the CQC's assessment of the quality of care is based on five questions – Is it safe? Effective? Caring? Responsive? Well-led?
