Dental neglect and professional responsibilities

Neglect is the commonest and one of the most harmful forms of child abuse. Dental professionals need to be aware of general and dental neglect, how to identify these problems and the action they need to take

Dental professionals have a responsibility to act on any concerns they may have about the safety of a child.

There are many forms of child abuse, the commonest of which is neglect. Dental professionals should be aware of what general neglect and dental neglect are and how to respond to these appropriately.

In 2003, the government published Every Child Matters (Department for Education and Skills, 2003), which identified ‘being healthy’ and ‘staying safe’ as two of the five most important outcomes for children and young people. A 10–year strategy for the delivery of these outcomes was produced in 2004 (Department of Health, 2004). This document adopted safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children as one of its key standards.
