Dental implants: the basics for dental nurses

A number of systems and techniques are used in dental implant therapy. Having a basic knowledge of the different types of implant and the procedures around their placement will enable nurses to work with dentists using different systems

Having nursed and worked around dental implantology for over 16 years, I have seen a lot of changes to dental implant design.

Working in a multi-implant system practice, our trainee nurses are concerned that they will have to learn about each system. However, nurses who understand the basics of implant design should be able to apply this knowledge to all systems they might work with and use a system even if their knowledge of that system is limited.

In basic terms, an implant is a false root. It is generally made from titanium. Onto this, an abutment or post is attached, over which a prosthesis (crown or denture) is fixed. That is dental implant therapy in a nutshell.
