Patients are full of interesting information gleaned from the internet. Here, dental therapist Melonie Prebble wades through the good, the bad and the alarming to offer some guidance on what to say when confronted with those questionable ‘facts’

These days, it can be a nightmare for anyone when it comes to making a decision about anything. Reviews dominate the decision-making process and how did we ever settle on a hotel, restaurant, film or book without the internet to guide us?

Many of our patients apply much the same approach to deciding how best to take care of their health and wellbeing – and, although the internet is a wonderful source for advice, alongside the many reliable health websites sit some pretty poor ones and so-called social media influencers with guidance that’s incorrect at best and dangerous at worst.

Conflicting tips do not only cause a conundrum for them and a headache for us but, if they follow the wrong guidance, it can be detrimental to their health and many hours spent in surgery whilst we address the damage.
