Infection prevention and control is an often unsung aspect of the delivery of dental care, but it is an incredibly important component. Earlier this year, a story hit the headlines concerning an incident that involved letters sent out to more than 500 patients warning of a potential HIV infection and involved a hygienist who had been practising in Hertfordshire. An ultrasonic scaler used by the hygienist had not been properly sterilised, and although the risk of infection to other patients was low, there was immediate reputational damage to the practice and patients were, understandably, angry that a medical establishment they trusted had put them at risk.
