The Care Quality Commission (CQC) is the statutory regulator for dental care services in England. Dental services must be registered with the CQC if they intend to provide regulated activities. The CQC has the authority to impose fundamental standards to ensure safe, effective dental care and dental nurses must contribute to the achievement of these standards or the practice will face censure, fines and, in the worst cases, closure.

In response to concerns over the safety and quality of health and social care services in England, parliament enacted the Health and Social Care Act 2008 that created:
