Every dental practice must take the health of its patients and staff seriously – and that means working hard to create a clean and safe environment. Aside from the statutory requirements, the consequences of not maintaining a spotless working environment can be lethal.
The dental practice is a unique incubator for biofilms and viruses, with a reliance on waterlines, handpieces that aspirate water and methods that often bring staff into contact with blood and saliva. Waterlines – even new equipment – can become a breeding ground for potentially dangerous bacteria. The lengthy tube contains water, which can become stagnant if left overnight. The water is kept in the dark and may not be agitated for days, even more so if left over a weekend.
