Laura Maddison became a dental nurse at 16 and has just graduated as a dentist. Here, she shares her amazing and inspiring career journey

Dental nurse Laura Maddison, from Sunderland, caught our eye on Twitter as she celebrated graduating as a dentist from Newcastle University. Having left school at 16 to work as a dental nurse, the world of dentistry proved so inspiring that she committed to retraining as a clinician. She completed an access to higher education course at East Durham College, attending three nights a week, which helped to take her next massive step in her career. She has just graduated from Newcastle University as a dentist and starts her foundation year at a practice in Sunderland, having ranked 37th out of 1,070 dental students in the UK based on interview and test results.
