
The most recent data shows that nearly half a million people live in care homes in the UK. People who live in care homes have a higher risk of having oral health problems, which means good oral health care practices are key to their quality of life, affecting people’s ability to eat, speak and socialise normally.
More than half of older adults who live in care homes have tooth decay, compared to 40 per cent of over 75s who do not live in care homes.
In December 2016, NICE (the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) introduced a new quality standard, Oral health promotion in the community.
