The journey of dental nurses toward being able to be more involved in practical patient care with an extended role began as long ago as 1997, when the Blair Government vowed to expand the availability NHS dentistry, so that everyone wanting to access NHS dental care would be able to do so. At that time, there was a severe shortage of NHS dental provision; to fulfill this promise their intentions included extending the scope of practice for dental care professionals (DCPs). In turn, this prompted a process of extending the dental education available for DCPs, which is a process that is still ongoing today.
