Laura Lane outlines the basic knowledge a dental nurse should have regarding Haemophilia.

Haemophilia is a genetic disorder where blood does not clot, normally caused by the malfunction of certain clotting factors. This is most likely to be an inherited condition and predominantly affects males.

Haemophilia is a medical condition that comes with its challenges within thedental practice. As dental nurses, we need to know and understand these challenges and how to manage patients with Haemophilia safely. Patients who have Haemophilia are at a far higher risk of prolonged bleeding, even when faced with a minor injury or procedure hence why we need to be awareof this. Dental procedures can be particularly challenging for patients with Haemophilia because even minor injuries or treatments can lead to excessive bleeding. Therefore, us as dental nurses must be aware of the precautions necessary to take when providing care to these patient groups.
