The presence of bacterial biofilm in dental unit waterlines (DUWLs) is a widespread problem and, if left untreated, poses a potentially significant risk of infection to both patients and the dental team. Biofilm contamination of DUWLs occurs for a variety of reasons, not least because in the majority of today’s most commonly used treatment centres, water is delivered by a network of narrow bore tubing. This provides an ideal environment for the development of biofilm and is why close monitoring and continuous water maintenance treatment is essential if practices are to be compliant with HTM 01-05 or other infection control regulations.
