Barriers to participation in CPD, education and development

8 mins read CPD requirements
At the end of the first 5-year CPD cycle and in the wake of a number of studies looking at participation in education and development and CPD, this article considers the barriers that dental nurses have reported and what changes might promote greater participation

Two publications commissioned by the General Dental Council (GDC) identified a number of issues affecting dental professionals’ participation in CPD activities (Eaton et al, 2011; Pinto and Robinson, 2012). Five further studies, dating back to 2006, considered the implications of education and development (E&D) and CPD specifically for dental nurses (Ross and Ibbetson, 2006; Mercer et al, 2007; Durkan et al, 2012; Moons et al, 2012; Turner et al, 2012). Based on a review of these five studies, the reported barriers to participation are highlighted and used to discuss what changes could or should occur in relation to attitudes, and the type and provision of programmes.
