Cross infection control is paramount in surgical dental implant procedures – not only to prevent the transmission of harmful pathogens from individual to individual, but also to enhance the long-term success of dental implant and bone augmentation procedures. Each practice has their own way of achieving asepsis but here we explore a commonly recognised team-led approach to outline some of the methods used in its attainment.

Why use aseptic techniques?

Asepsis is ‘the absence of living pathogenic organisms’. (Miller.M.Ed. 2008. p155) and, when achieved as far as possible during surgical implant procedures, pathogen control can:
