There are many hidden costs and time-consuming tasks linked to being a dental nurse, whether in a hospital, care home or dental surgery. As well as the actual hours worked on a daily and weekly basis, nurses have the additional pressures of ensuring that they are properly dressed and turned out for work. Many people in the UK work in industries with casual dress codes, and most people don't have to worry about the hygienic suitability of clothes when they get dressed. For dental nurses, however, there is a strict dress code that must be adhered to, including specific shoes and garments that must be worn. On top of this, uniforms must be kept spotless, which often translates to daily washing and tumble drying.
