We are a nation addicted to sugar – so how can dental teams help break those habits of a lifetime? Timothy Ives shares his insight on the power of the ‘tribe’.

The power of the sugar industry is not to be taken lightly. Every year, global sugar consumption increases more than the population and every year more and more people become unhealthier and many may die as a result.

Approximately 85% of the products sold in a supermarket contain sugar and most people in the western world are now addicted to this white powder.

I am part of a team of dental professionals fighting the sugar industry and sugar addiction.

But firstly, I should admit I am addicted to sugar and have been for a very long time. I now manage to go weeks avoiding it but, like any addiction, I find it a daily struggle to do this. My motivation is I am far healthier when I don’t consume it and my taste has changed so that it simply doesn’t taste good as it masks so many other flavours.
