This series continues to explore the leadership skills of the dental nurse. In this issue, John Fowler asks: do you light up your team?

I've been a registered nurse for about 40 years and, during that period, I must have worked in about 30 different clinical areas and 30 educational teams. If I draw upon the depths of my memory, I can recall about 20 of those leaders – a few because they were so bad, but mostly because they were good. Try that exercise yourself and recall some of your previous or current clinical leaders who you consider to be good. Have you got at least one or two? Now try to identify six of the skills or qualities they demonstrated that make you put them in that category of a ‘good’ clinical leader. Compare your list to mine.
