Where does the role of the dental nurse stand in the modern practice – and how can they add value? Guy Deeming offers a snapshot of what works for him and his team.

For a long time, dental nurses have underpinned the work of dental practices and supported dentists quietly from the wings. The inception of the registered dental nurses and expanded duty skillsets have been incremental in creating career opportunities for dental nurses, increasing the range of things that they can do within a practice to support the work of the dentist.

But dentists now need to recognise what they have in their dental nursing team. If they don’t, it’s like having a fancy piece of equipment that never gets used. If you have individuals in your team who are skilled and able to provide treatments or support, then utilise them. From taking photographs, X-rays and intraoral scans to providing oral health advice and treatment coordinator-type services, dental nurses have so much to offer.
