An overview of aesthetic solutions in orthodontics

This article aims to review current aesthetic orthodontic treatment options. The advantages and disadvantages of techniques, such as clear fixed braces, lingual braces and aligners are discussed in turn along with some clinical implications for practice.

In recent years, there has been a steady increase in the number of adults seeking orthodontic treatment and in the demand for aesthetic appliances (Natrass and Sandy, 1995). The development of appliances that combine both acceptable aesthetics for the patient and adequate technical performance for the clinician is the ultimate goal. A range of aesthetic orthodontic solutions are available to the orthodontist (Table 1). This article aims to review the different aesthetic orthodontic appliances and discuss their indications, advantages and disadvantages.
