I was always interested in a clinical career. When I applied for a temporary trainee dental nurse position, I thoroughly enjoyed it and decided to stay. I complete the qualification just as the new guidelines were about to be introduced for dental nurses to become GDC registered and I cannot imagine being in any other profession.
Dental nurses need to be friendly and understanding in order to really enjoy the role. We deal with so many people from different backgrounds, and many organisations as a practice, so we get to meet a large variety of people. We often need to provide basic care and education to a whole host of patients, so being flexible with our expectations of people and their emotions is really helpful to the benefit of everyone’s wellbeing. A good memory and being a team player are really important, too – especially at the end of the day!
