Dental nursing, it can certainly be said, is much different from what it used to be. Dental nurses in the past would be expected to quietly sit in the background supporting their dentist, doing little else. Fast forward to the present day, with our ever-expanding skill sets and extra duties. Whilst it is unquestionably an expanded workload, it also means we can offer so much more as dental nurses; both to practices and to our dentists. We are not just suction machines- as many would perhaps have you think!
Although dental nursing is at times thought of as a ‘stepping stone’ job and is at times treated as such, I see it as an earnestly worthwhile career.I and many others I know are keen to keep progressing, and never want to stop learning. I will never turn down an opportunity to improve my patient care skills and excel further in my role. However, some dental nurses see dental nursing as ‘just a job’ - they want to come to work, do their thing, and go home and that is that which is completely fine too!
