In everyday life, people smile as a gesture of politeness, thanks, or even to get the attention of someone they feel attracted to. Although it is a natural gesture, many people avoid smiling or try to cover their smile using their hands.
Oral health and the appearance of their smile are the main reasons people avoid smiling or participating in social events. Lack of teeth, periodontitis, or bad breath are some factors that can determine a person’s low self-esteem. Those with missing teeth, especially in the front areas or in wide spaces, tend to avoid the company of other people during meals. They put their hands over their mouths when they speak; they prefer phone conversations or communication on social networks to protect their image and avoid direct interaction. Social events such as lunch or dinner with friends or family can become a worst scenario for people who struggle to chew their food or have to wear a denture, which sometimes comes out at the most inopportune moment. Missing or crooked teeth can impact the confidence of an individual in professional environments such as going for an interview or having a customer-facing role.
