A review of the future supply of dental care professionals

There has been little contemporary published evidence concerning the current and future dental care professional (DCP) (and, in particular, dental nurses) workforce alone. This article will discuss some of the implications for dental nurses from the findings of the contemporary research

A previous article by this author in Dental Nursing acknowledged that opportunities exist for a new skill mix within the profession (Marshall, 2014). Parker (2014) also makes the point that there is an expectation within the profession and the government that the skills mix that delivers care to patients will change in the near future. Dental care professionals (DCPs), and dental nurses in particular will need to take on a wider role.

In order for the workforce to deliver the care needed, there have been suggestions that there need to be regular reviews of the dental workforce that would deliver the care (Try, 2000; Gallager and Wilson, 2009; Marshall, 2014).
