In this article, we will explore the provision of a mentor and the use of reflection, when used in conjunction with a personal development plan (PDP). This is a timely article, when we consider the change in mandatory personal and professional development in relation to maintaining our registration with the General Dental Council (GDC). The new regulations come into effect as of 1 August 2018 (See Table 1)

As you can see from Table 1, the non-verifiable continuous professional development (CPD) has been discontinued. Therefore, emphasis has been placed on the quality rather than the quantity of our CPD. We are also being asked to reflect on the CPD we attend and to examine the impact this learning will have on our practice, if any.
