There is an essential need to improve the support provided to our growing elderly population living in nursing and residential care homes in the UK, if we are to begin to address the inequalities in oral care for these vulnerable groups. This article will outline the basic UK statistics relating to these vulnerable groups, discuss the importance of good oral health and provide an outline of the Oral Care Improvement Project, commissioned by Rochdale Public Health. It will explore the challenges faced by healthcare staff providing oral care within this ever-changing environment.
