A guide to understanding and writing policies

Policies are commonplace, but what are they really all about? What makes them important to dental nursing practice and should dental nurses become more involved with them?

The term ‘policy’ may be defined as the basic principles, or guidance, that directs our actions (Business Dictionary, 2012). In health care, policies are considered essential for consistent delivery of high quality care (Reeves, 2004). There are many policies that apply to dental nurses and failing to comply with them may compromise both professional standards and competence (General Dental Council (GDC), 2005). This article suggests that professional policies are non-negotiable and as dental professionals, we have a responsibility to become more involved in the policies that govern our practice.

Policies inform the working lives of dental professionals by setting out what procedures or action to take in each area of practice. Policies often provide a series of steps that contribute to achieving an outcome.
