Found above the hills of Ugandan industrial town Lugazi, Toowa (pronounced Toe-ah) is a small village with a population of approximately 6,000 people – women and children being the highest percentage of this population. The people here survive in temporary and semi-permanent housing, with children sent to fetch water from its far-off source, using plastic cans to carry the water on their heads. With very little money, families grow their own food and sell the surplus so that they can pay for other services and items such as clothing, essential medicine and even education. For those with even less money, hiring farming land is possible, so that they can grow food to feed their families. Other forms of work in the area include working at the stone quarry, brick laying or providing a ‘taxi’ service on a motorbike known as a Boda-boda.
