The Gillies Unit provides services for the specialities of maxillofacial surgery, orthodontics, restorative dentistry, oral medicine and special care dentistry. The unit is based in Queen Mary’s Hospital, Sidcup and is part of King’s College Hospital NHS Trust.

Due to trench warfare, the soldiers frequently peered over the parapet of the trench, whilst they wore helmets they had nothing on protecting their faces, and combined with the use of shells filled with shrapnel there was a significant increase in several facial injuries at the time.
