Learning comes in many guises and for dental nurse Paula Martin, reading this journal helped her in her path to greater things. Here, she shares some other key benefits that have shaped her career

Having started my dental nursing career in October 1986, I had no clue what vision or career path lay ahead of me. Little did I know that, 30 years later I would be still as enthusiastic now as I was then to learn and absorb education related to all aspects of dental nursing.

1. The benefits of juggling roles

I worked in general practice dentistry in the early to mid-section of my career, and now do two days a week in a supervisory management role and in clinic – as and when required. I began to teach the NEBDN National Diploma five years ago as a part-time lecturer at Belfast Metropolitan College. I work two jobs happily with huge support from my employers and family. Working in a dental nursing clinical situation and teaching the diploma curriculum are closely linked – keeping me current with updated policies and protocols, which I can then share with my students.
