Dental nurse Joyce Meeson shares the golden days of her career

Joyce Meeson, 69, trained in Birmingham Dental Hospital and has worked there ever since qualifying in 1969, clocking up an impressive 50 years in dentistry. Her career has taken her from ‘naked’ practice – without the need for gloves, eye wear or any other PPE – to digital imaging, computerised records, cosmetic treatments and beyond.

So, what insight does she have, with five decades of practice behind her? She shares her experiences as she embarks on the next chapter of her life.

What makes a dental nurse?

Dexterity, compassion, patience and a good sense of humour. The work is challenging and these traits suit the wide range of requirements of the job. Good communication skills are key as well as excellent organisational skills. Being polite, approachable and offering a smile puts the patients at ease. The patients’ comfort and wellbeing should always be a priority.
