Based in the James Hehir building at the Ipswich campus, the 24 students have been welcomed by course leader, Catia Marques and lecturers Stacianne Tennant and Yasmin Ryan, and they will be aiming to help fill the gap in dental care provision by being trained in the dental development centre.
Long-term, the aim is to develop a sustainable, multi-skilled dental scare workforce “fit for the future” through cutting-edge training and education.
Among the facilities the students have access to are dental care patient simulators, or phantom heads, which allow them “hands on” training.
Catia Marques, course leader, said, “We are thrilled to have started the BSc (Hons) Dental Hygiene and Dental Therapy course, welcoming our first cohort at the start of this year who will lead the way to improve oral health in Suffolk and beyond.”
