Child vaping increase

​The annual YouGov youth survey for Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) carried out in March and published July 7, 2021, shows current vaping among children 11-17 is up from four per cent in 2020 to seven per cent in 2022. The proportion of children who admit ever having tried vaping has also risen from 14 per cent in 2020 to 16 per cent in 2022.

Early years food - sugar

Action on Sugar responds to the recent changes in the UK health system. In a recent news article Action on Sugar said, “The National Food Strategy (NFS) team proposed bold, evidence-based recommendations that would have an enormous impact on improving our food system, making healthier food more available and accessible to all. The Government’s response to the NFS, which has been eagerly anticipated since January 2022, was published June 13, 2022.

Keeping track of CPD

​I consider myself very lucky to have had a really varied career in dental nursing, which is now – I can scarcely believe – into its fifth decade. I have worked in a variety of clinical environments including general dentistry, oral maxillofacial surgery, and orthodontics. As my clinical career progressed, so too did my interest – and then passion – in education and development; since 2007 I have focused solely on education, supporting dental nurses to develop in their own careers.

BASCD awards

​The British Association for the Study of Community Dentistry (BASCD) is an alliance of individual members with an interest in population oral health. Honorary membership is awarded if a member is nominated from BASCD Council and gains two thirds majority vote at the AGM.

Sugar-free and dental caries

​For many parents, sugar-free alternatives for their children’s snacks are a positive way to manage their child’s oral health and sugar intake. A new study from the International Association for Dental Research suggests sugar-free might have negative effects on oral health for children.

Diabetes and tooth decay

A new study by Mohammad Ali Saghiri from Rutgers University suggests that Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes are prone to tooth decay. The study suggests that such individuals have reduced strength and durability of enamel and dentin. As a result, their teeth are significantly weakened and more susceptible to tooth decay.

​The British Dental Association (BDA) has warned that signals the General Dental Council (GDC) will move to increase the Annual Retention Fee (ARF) will only undermine progress in rebuilding trust and confidence in the regulator among the profession.

GDC’s three-year plan

​The General Dental Council (GDC) has today opened a consultation on its plans for the next three years. The regulator is seeking views on its proposed strategy which focuses on ways both to prevent patient harm and to be proportionate when handling the concerns it receives, progressing its ambition to shift the balance from enforcement to prevention.

The benefits of chewing gum

National Smile Month, which ended June 16, 2022, has been running along broadly the same lines for nearly half a century. The first event, ‘Smile ’77’, was a week-long campaign in the West Midlands. The poet Pam Ayres wrote I Wish I'd Looked After Me Teeth especially for the event (subsequently voted 'Top 10’ in a BBC poll of the Nation's 100 Favourite poems).

15 years after the smoking ban

July first, 2022, is the fifteenth anniversary of the 2007 Smokefree legislation that prohibited smoking inside public spaces such as offices, shops and pubs. Support for government action on smoking has continued to grow since then, particularly among smokers, as demonstrated by a new report ‘15 Smokefree Years’ summarising results from the annual survey carried out since 2007 by YouGov for ASH.
