Regulator disappointed

Steps towards reform to the legislation that underpins the UK’s healthcare regulators were taken on February 17, 2022, as the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) sets out the direction for future reforms. The General Dental Council (GDC) welcomes this important milestone but is extremely disappointed by the timetable.

World Dental Hygienist Awards

Sunstar, the international oral healthcare company, has announced the return of the World Dental Hygienist Awards (WDHA), after a three-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic. First established in 2007, the WDHA recognises and honours the work and accomplishments of dental hygienists who have made significant contributions to the dental hygiene field.

Soothing anxious patients

Going to the Witney dental clinic has been made a lot more relaxing following the addition of special LED ceiling screens that show either a soothing static image of the sky or can play a choice of nature-themed films. They are designed to help relax and distract anxious patients enabling the dentist to examine them and carry out any treatments. They have already been shown to reduce patient’s anxiety levels, particularly in children.

MP supports dental nurses

Following a meeting with BADN president Debra Worthington, Labour MP Cat Smith (Fleetwood and Lancaster) – who spoke recently in the House of Commons about the state of NHS dentistry in her constituency and the difficulties faced by her constituents on accessing NHS dental care – has written to Jeremy Hunt, chancellor of the exchequer, and the secretary of state for health and social care, Steve Barclay MP.

Child dental problems rise

According to Swedish researchers, up to 20 per cent of children have a particularly virulent strain of Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) in their mouths, which has a greater-than-usual ability to cause severe tooth decay. Finnish health technology company Koite Health Oy – named one of the hottest European startups in 2022 – has launched a method for targeted removal of dental plaque to improve children’s declining oral health.
