The one-day nutrition workshops by hygienist Juliette Reeves are aimed at those who want to extend knowledge or learn more about nutrition in a dental setting.

They are aimed at dental hygienists and therapists and the entire dental team.

Juliette has written and lectured internationally for more than 20 years on nutritional biochemistry and the systemic associations between nutrition and oral health.

She's been involved in a number of radio broadcast interviews, in addition to presenting two papers at Euro Perio 7 and the ADI Members Forum.

Juliette received a lifetime achievement award for Outstanding Contribution to Dental Hygiene and Therapy in 2014 and was recently honored to be awarded the prestigious Gerald Leatherman Award from the BSDHT in November 2015.

These workshops aims to introduce clinical nutrition to all members of the dental team. It will provide an overview of clinical nutrition with a focus on introducing nutritional guidance to support the management of periodontal disease in every day dental practice.

Part 1

The aim of this one-day workshop is to define basic nutrition principles

Outline nutritional biochemistry relevant to chronic inflammation with a focus on the periodontal tissues

Objectives

Explore the practical application of clinical nutrition relevant to oral health

Identify dietary habits that have an effect on chronic inflammation

Examine carbohydrate and protein intake relative to oral health and chronic inflation

Demonstrate an understanding of the role of fatty acid`s and vitamin D in inflammatory bone loss

Identify the resolution of chronic inflammation and describe the influence of oral and gut micro biome in both oral and systemic health

Define marginal deficiency and physical observation techniques

Learning outcomes
  • Understand the principles of a healthy diet especially related to oral health and its links with systemic health
  • Identify dietary practices that exacerbate chronic inflammation
  • Provide clear evidence-based dietary advice with respect to chronic inflammation with a focus on the periodontal tissues

It will enable you to introduce nutritional management of periodontal disease into your everyday practice.

The course will cover:

  • basic nutrition principles
  • nutritional biochemistry relevant to chronic inflammation and the periodontal tissues

The practical application of clinical nutrition will be presented and you'll also have the opportunity to study a case history.

You'll gain 6.5 hours of verifiable CPD (continuing professional development).

The course is run by the South West Deanery.

Course content

This workshop will cover the following:

  • Essential fatty acids and inflammatory bone loss
  • The resolution of chronic inflammation

You'll need to be a qualified dental therapist or hygienist, or a dental nurse with at least five years' experience.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, you should be able to:

  • understand the principals of a healthy diet
  • identify dietary practices that exacerbate chronic inflammation
  • provide clear evidence-based dietary advice with respect to chronic inflammation and the periodontal tissues

Structure and teaching

The day will run from approximately 9:30am to 5pm and is divided into four parts:

  • A nutrition and biochemistry revision session relevant to chronic inflammation and periodontal disease
  • A nutrition and oral health session with a review of the latest research and evidence
  • A practical session in the form of case-history demonstrations
  • Self-assessment quiz, review and discussion time

D points and certificate

You'll gain 6.5 hours of verifiable CPD, plus a certificate of attendance.

All Eastman teachers are experienced professionals. You'll be asked to submit written feedback via a questionnaire at the end of the course, which is used to monitor the course's quality of teaching and value for money.
