Julie Bissett considers the options for Muslim women in dentistry and how they can adhere to their religious guidance on dress in line with uniform policy

Batool Karimi wants to be a dental nurse. But her enthusiastic online research into the role came to a halt when she began reading up on the profession’s expectations for dress code.

How would any uniform policy that requires dental care professionals to be bare below the elbow (BBE) fit with her faith should she wish to pursue a career in dentistry?

She explains, “I am a Muslim woman and part of my faith is to cover my arms, legs and wear clothes that do not reveal the shape of my body. Looking at the various images of dental nurses and reading information about the role, I realised it requires wearing short sleeves, which sadly means I cannot pursue this as a career.”
