The coronavirus pandemic has swept aside everything we have ever taken for granted about the way we live our lives, says Ian Pope

The coronavirus pandemic has brought with it a wave of unprecedented change, including government lockdowns, social distancing and self-isolation, the grounding of aeroplanes and the closure of borders. The list is endless and could have far-reaching consequences for us all. The pandemic has completely pulled apart conventional patterns – both in the make-up of our workplaces and in the social fabric of our societies.

Amid this global chaos, dentistry, of course, has not gone unscathed. With dental practices in the UK shutting down for all but emergencies – and many staff redeployed or volunteering to help fellow healthcare workers on the frontline – one wonders what this might mean for the profession and the future delivery of dentistry once we emerge on the other side.
