A look at BrushUpUK’s mission to improve the oral health education provided to substance and alcohol misuse rehabilitation projects in South West England

BrushUpUK uses registered, qualified and DBS-checked dental care professionals in local areas to volunteer their time to give oral health presentations. The dental care professionals are paid as usual by their practices that, in return, become affiliates of the BrushUpUK charity. This enhances the philanthropic profile of the practice and also gives each educator the opportunity to use their expertise to really make a difference to a wider range of people.

Expansion

In 2016, BrushUpUK ran a successful programme to provide dental education to staff working directly with recovering alcohol and/or substance misusers. The programme has expanded for 2017 and it is now providing education directly to the clients with specifically trained dental hygienists, therapists and OHE-qualified dental nurses. The need for the BrushUpUK's substance misuse oral disease prevention project is immense.
