Life as an army dental nurse

5 mins read Professionalism/career development
Lance Corporal Katie Squires wanted to be in the military from the age of 12. Growing up near the Royal Naval Air Station (RNAS) Yeovilton near Yeovil, Somerset, she joined the army cadets and this enhanced her vision as to what it offered – a stable career and an opportunity to earn while learning. Taking her out of her comfort zone and cementing lifelong friendships, it also meant working with teams who, she says, “will support and better you”.

Katie joined the British Army in October 2016, having completed Phase 1 training at ATR Winchester. She went onto Phase 2 training at DMS Whittington at Lichfield, where she completed 15 weeks training to learn the basic skills to become a military dental nurse, posted to her first military dental centre where she studied for her National Diploma in Dental Nursing for a year and a half. On qualifying, she was then posted to her second military dental centre where she worked for three years. Now into her third posting, she has attached to a medical regiment.

Katie recalls: “I never knew anything dentistry outside the army other than going for my own dental check-ups. But I have had the best training within the army that has got me to where I am today.
