Given the current dental staffing crisis in the UK, practice teams need to rethink and remodel their recruitment plans if they are to attract the best possible candidates.

With morale low and expectations high, dental nurses buckled under extra PPE and additional workload during the pandemic, with many finding roles more fulfilling and financially rewarding outside of dentistry. Anecdotally, supermarket hourly rates appeared ever more favourable, with the day-to-day roles less burdensome.

Covid-19 and Brexit created a perfect storm for the recruitment of dental professionals in the UK. Having previously relied on people from abroad to fill gaps, travel and quarantine restrictions hit hard and the dental workforce has been impacted.

Changes that came with Brexit hampered freedom of movement between the rest of Europe and the UK, preventing that easy flow of people into our dental businesses.
