The adolescent patient group can be a challenging one to engage with. Adolescents often enjoy exercising their freedom, which may be in the form of smoking, drug experimentation, drinking alcohol, frequent sugar consumption and a lack of oral hygiene routine. Growth spurts among this age group can also account for an increased sugar intake.
Surprisingly, It has been shown that children who go to bed later than their parents are up to four times more likely to develop decay.1 It is believed that this increased risk is due to a combination of not brushing teeth before bedtime and missing breakfast the following day which often leads to snacking.
