A reminder of the guidance for domestic abuse and safeguarding for general dental practices by Sandra White, national lead for dental public health for Public Health England

In an NHS dentistry and oral health update last month, chief dental officer for England, Sara Hurley, chose to draw attention to domestic abuse and how dental teams can, and should, help survivors and victims.

‘Dental professionals are likely to observe and identify injuries to the head, eyes, ears, neck, face, mouth and teeth as well as other welfare concerns.’

She adds: ‘Combating domestic abuse is not just a medical mission, it’s a moral mission, too. Dentistry like all other areas of the NHS and healthcare must do its bit to help the patient and each other.’
