The General Dental Council’s Scope of Practice for the dental team sets out the tasks that different team members can undertake if they are trained and competent in the skill.
For dental nurses, this has led to an ever expanding role, allowing them to become more interactive with patients in surgery and to start playing a greater role in providing patients with access – not only to care but to education, too. This, in turn, allows patients to work to help themselves in the prevention of oral diseases.
Courses in oral health education, plaque indices scoring and fluoride varnish application are a few now readily available for dental nurses to extend their competencies and duties.
