When I first joined university, I was very nervous and quite timid. I struggled with being assertive and having confidence with my ability to deal with real-life patients. Learning the clinical skills in the lab therefore gave me a safe environment in which I could ask any questions and make any initial mistakes.
One thing that was quite daunting for the majority of my cohort was the idea of catching the patient’s cheek with the suction tube. As a result of this, our practice educator allowed us to practise on each other so we knew where exactly to place the suction to avoid this and also encouraged us that it was not the end of the world if it did happen.
