Studies into the prevalence of adult hypersensitivity vary in their findings from as little as 3.8%1 of the population, up to 98%2 suffering with the condition. Whatever the rate of occurrence, the impact on the quality of life of individuals can be significant due to the discomfort caused. Because of the scale of the problem, there are frequently new materials, techniques and products introduced to the market to help tackle the symptoms and prevent worsening of the condition. Hypersensitivity has been defined as ‘pain derived from exposed dentine in response to chemical, thermal tactile or osmotic stimuli which cannot be explained as arising from any other dental defect or disease’3.
