The Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2000 require all operators directly involved in the radiography of patients to be adequately trained.
Qualifications in dental nurse radiography are well-established in the UK, and conform with IR(ME)R requirements, allowing dental nurses to undertake radiographic examinations under the prescription of a dentist1.
In dental practice, qualified dental nurses frequently carry out radiography but, traditionally, in dental hospitals, radiographers have undertaken dental radiographs.
Recruitment and retention of radiography staff within UK dental hospitals, including Leeds Dental Institute (LDI), has been difficult.
In order to address staff shortages – and at the same time utilise the extended skills of dental nurses – the LDI is the first UK dental school to employ full-time Band Five dental nurses to play a vital role in the radiology department, undertaking radiography examinations whilst working alongside radiographer colleagues.
