Oral health is important to general health and wellbeing. Poor oral health has a major impact on a person's quality of life and advice to prevent poor oral health must be given to all patients

Dental caries and periodontal disease are the most common dental problems in the UK. They can be painful, expensive to treat and can seriously damage health if left unchecked. Both of these diseases are preventable. We, as the dental profession, play an important role in educating patients of the importance of good oral health.

According to Adult Dental Health Survey (Health and Social Care Information Centre, 2011) the following statistics show:

? 66% of dentate adults has some visible plaque on at least one tooth

? 68% had some calculus

? Average brushing time was 46 seconds

? 31% have tooth decay

? 25% of adults don't brush twice a day, including a third of men
