Periodontology is about the diagnosis and treatment of gum disease, although the current thinking is to raise awareness of the symptoms so it is prevented or spotted as early as possible. Patients would usually visit a periodontist if they show signs of severe gingivitis or gum disease (periodontitis) and have been referred by their GDP. Around 10% of the population is susceptible to severe forms of periodontitis although moderate periodontitis affects about 45% of the adult population. Symptoms of gum disease include red, tender and bleeding gums, moving teeth and halitosis. It is also linked to systemic conditions including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, pregnancy complications and Alzheimer's.
