The academic dental nurse

Kelly Henderson discusses the new Foundation Degree in Advanced Nursing, and the challenges and rewards that entering academia offers

For many years, there has been a clear pathway for dental nurses. The options included becoming a practice manager, teaching, becoming a senior nurse within the community or hospital setting, specialising, or going on to train as a dental hygiene therapist. However, I just want to be an excellent dental nurse. I really enjoy my role and the patient contact. Over the past 13 years in the industry, I have been very lucky as my employers have paid for, and supported me, on the postgraduate courses of radiography and oral health education, as well as the advanced orthodontic nursing qualification. Nevertheless, it has always been one of my ambitions to gain a degree, and fortunately this is now an option within the field of dental nursing.
